I recently moved to the NW side of Chicago and really miss the charm of this area. Thank you for rekindling it! Oh and a tip, when you started your walk, right next door to the fish joint, is Escapes, a gay bar. You can see it the first pic shown. I meant "I hiked in the opposite direction ...Oops. I meant "I hiked in the opposite direction adn NOT as extensively as you did". That's pretty heroic walking you did, John. I walk a lot but not quite on your level.

A couple of corrections:
The urban farm of Growing Home I was trying to remember is actually on 58th and Wood, not 61st as I remembered (I was thinking of Lindblom High). Very well-worth visiting despite being further north than I remember:
http://www.growinghomeinc.org/

Su Casa however is definitely at 51st and Laflin. The other possible location being considered for the Englewood Farmer's Market is outside King College (which John mentioned in orig post). But Englewood is split into 4-5 different wards and the politics of who gets what done and where can be really complicated. BTW there is another farmer's market (also new this year) at 61st between Dorchester and Blackstone (Saturday mornings).

Sherry-Brenner should be spelled so.

The "Middle-eastern" stretch of 63rd is pretty well-documented specially by the local historian Ray Hanania. The area is still anchored culturally by the small mosque, although I believe that there was originally a great number of the immigrants were Palestinian Christians (from Ramallah etc) and/or Maronite Catholics. I wrote a bit about this stretch years ago in here among other places:
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/112708#612399

Steve's Shish Kebab (which used to be on the 3800W block) was widely considered the very best Middle-eastern restaurant in the whole city. I still remember several wonderful meals with friends, and the voluptuous hummus. Steve's moved to Palos Hills about 3 (?) years ago. Also lost from 63rd about 3 years ago is a superb little Mexican restaurant with the most intriguing name: Mexico Inquieto (Restless Mexico).

RichardAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2740337178383703709.post-2793244490962910192008-09-12T12:19:00.000-07:002008-09-12T12:19:00.000-07:00Man! John Greenfield!I haven't run into you since ...Man! John Greenfield!
I haven't run into you since probably 1999 (perhaps at Gold Star? or Phyllis'?) Long time! I'm using a public library computer now and it doesn't allow me to connect to internet wizard. I'll try to get your email later and catch up with you (you probably will be wondering who I am).

I guess we both had "63rd on my mind" yesterday. I did quite a hike on 63rd as well at around midday but in the opposite direction (and certainly as extensively as you did). Had a spectacular lunch sitting at the bar at Garifuna Flava and shooting the breeze with Hussein whose family owns the place. The family is well-connected with Belizean/Garifuna musicians (inclg the late great Andy Palacios) and the space is set up to serve (eventually) as a venue for local Garifuna musicians to jam at. Belizean independence day is coming up and Garifuna Flava will present a line-up of musicians on Sep 21 Saturday. That might be a great time to check out the place (dinners are served till midnight I think; the place is open till 2). I'll add more info when I get it from Hussein. There are many more places on 63rd that I love (for instance there's that cool little old school guitar shop called Sherry-brenner near Kedzie)and that I want to add to your list but I'll do that later. I also have to point out that just off 63rd itself, at 61st (and I think Wood) is one of the Chicago farms of Growing Home-very exciting urban farming project based in Englewood (the other in-Chicago Growing Home farm, called Su Casa, is at 51st and Laflin-I think-gotta check my addresses). I think that the farm can be visited on Wednesday afternoons. Also off 63rd, but also an exciting new development for Englewood is new farmer's market located at 65rd and Ashland, put together by a group of Englewood community organizations. It's not the best location for a farmer's market and there's been talk of trying to move it next year to the grounds of the library you mentioned above. Foot traffic at the market is not quite what it could be yet, but we're all rooting for it!!!!

Richard (RST)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2740337178383703709.post-47633877324800230462008-09-12T10:06:00.000-07:002008-09-12T10:06:00.000-07:00OMIT THIS PARAGRAPH?Not on your life, my friend.Ni...OMIT THIS PARAGRAPH?

Not on your life, my friend.

Nice work.

T.C.T.C.
