But I can't help arguing against your comment on the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Today South Korea is certainly a much better place than North Korea, but in 1950 any progressive person would have found the North more attractive. In both North and South, spontaneous local democratic assemblies emerged after liberation from the Japanese in 1945 and called for the punishment of colonial collaborators and land reform. The Communist government supported by the Soviet Union in the North worked with these groups and supported their demands, empowering the workers and peasants who made up the majority of the population and had been excluded from politics and education before.

But in the South, the US branded the democratic councils "communist" and enlisted colonial collaborators and large landowners to form a government. This government, with US help, crushed the popular forces and reinstalled the dictatorial regime of the Japanese with the US as its new sponsor.

When the civil war started in 1950, the North was following better policies and was more in keeping with the desires of the people (tho hints of authoritarianism were also obvious). The US invaded to prevent the North from taking over the whole country not to protect democracy or prosperity, but to keep an important strategic location under its control.

The Korean war killed 3-4 million people, pretty much all of North Korea was leveled by American bombing, and the US came very close to using nuclear weapons. It also was a major factor in turning the authoritarian but popular North Korean regime into the tyranny we know today.

Even so, as late as the 1970s the North Korean economy was performing better than South Korea's. It was a very particular set of developments that allowed the South, thru its connections with the expanding US economy, to eclipse the North, which was crippled when the Soviet economy collapsed in the early '90s.

The South also enjoys a good degree of political freedom and the chance to elect its leaders (not to imply that political and economic elites don't manipulate the process, but it's certainly far more democratic than in the North). Yet these freedoms were won not by the Korean war or because of US influence - in fact the US strongly supported South Korea's military dictators and their various atrocities (most infamously the 1980 Kwangju massacre of democracy protesters) right thru to the end. Korean democracy is instead a product of the struggles of students and workers in the 1980s and early '90s.

Vietnam is very similar in many ways. The US agreed in 1954 to allow elections in South Vietnam in 1956, then canceled the elections when it realized Ho Chi Minh would win them. The horrific destruction and killing of millions of people that followed was all done to prevent the people's choice from assuming power. Even so, the Vietnamese government is very different from that of North Korea, and the Vietnamese economy is doing fairly well.

It's hard to say what Korea and Vietnam would be like today if the US had not invaded them. But given the US's record of supporting and arming dictators and facilitating their atrocities, all in pursuit of strategic or economic advantage, I think we should almost always oppose the US government's wars. And we should certainly have a clear understanding of our past wars - maybe if we did, we wouldn't be in Iraq today.Walkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06912406198051338502noreply@blogger.com
